The Property tax department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued notice to 49 tax defaulters to pay their taxes else the civic body will confiscate their properties. The civic body has given them 21 days to pay their arrears, amounting to Rs 107 crores together.
Property tax is the biggest source of revenue of NMMC and during the COVID period, the civic body had introduced Abhay Yojana under which the civic body offered a rebate on interest for the delayed payments. However, many of the property holders with large arrears did not respond. Earlier, the civic body had issued notice to 26 property tax defaulters in June. So far, this year the civic body has already issued notice to 75 property tax defaulters.
Among 49 tax defaulters, 7 properties are in Belapur ward, 10 properties in Nerul ward, 2 properties in Vashi ward, 24 properties in Turbhe ward, 4 properties in Koparkhairane ward and 2 properties in Ghansoli ward. These property holders have property tax arrears of over Rs 107 crore.
“We have given them 21 days to pay the arrears, failing which their properties will be confiscated or auctioned,” said an official from the property tax department. He added that list is also being prepared of major tax defaulters ward-wise.
Earlier, Bangar had directed to set up a separate legal cell for the property tax department. “The civic body is setting up a separate cell in the property tax department to ensure that the record check and auction of the property is done within the stipulated time and in a proper manner. For this purpose, the department will also prepare a list of property tax defaulters in descending order from large arrears to low arrears, giving priority to large arrears, issuing legal notices to them and directing them to take further action,” added the official.
