Ambala: Local member of parliament Rattan Lal Kataria, who was Union minister of state for Jal Shakti, besides social justice and ermpowerment, resigned on Wednesday, losing his post within two years. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he had defeated incumbent Haryana Congress president Kumari Selja almost 3.42 lakh votes. He had won 57% of the constituency’s votes. He was earlier MP from Ambala in 1999 and 2014. Twice he lost to Selja, in the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections. In 2018, Kataria's wife, Banto Kataria, was appointed independent director of GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited), while in December 2019, his son, Chanderkant Kataria, was selected in the Haryana Civil Services as a Class-I officer. Before Kataria, Suraj Bhan of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was MP from Ambala and agriculture minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s central government of 1996.
