A 28-year-old man died after his motorbike was hit by a truck on the old Mumbai-Pune highway near Khopoli exit in Panvel on Wednesday.

One more biker suffered injuries as he too was hit by the same truck at the same spot.

According to the police, the truck was coming from Pune towards Mumbai. When it was crossing a bridge near Khopoli, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it hit a biker. The biker fell on the road and suffered minor injuries.

Even after hitting the motorbike, the truck driver could not control it and it rammed to the parapet wall of the bridge. “The truck then rammed to the parapet wall of the bridge and toppled on it. While toppling, it crashed into another bike which was coming from the other side,” said a police official. He added that the second biker identified as Mohan Borse, a resident of Karjat, suffered severe injuries at different parts of his body, and he was later declared dead in a nearby hospital.

After toppling, the truck caught fire that led to traffic congestion on the road. “The driver ran away from the spot after the accident, and we are now searching for him,” he said.
