England 'needed to go through adversity' at Euro 2020 and did so with semi-final victory over Denmark, says Jamie Carragher as he insists 'there's different things you have to overcome if you want to win a tournament'

Former England defender Jamie Carragher has hailed the Three Lions after coming from behind to beat Denmark and reach the final of Euro 2020.

Gareth Southgate's side fell behind on the half-hour mark to a Mikkel Damsgaard free-kick but a Simon Kjaer own goal nine minutes later levelled the scoreline before Harry Kane won it in extra-time.

Damsgaard's set-piece was the first goal England had conceded all tournament and put them on the backfoot before they adjusted and fought back.

And Carragher believes how the match played out was a good thing for Southgate's side as their journey to the semi-finals before had been too plain-sailing.

'I think when the Denmark goal went in that created panic but England always needed to go through adversity, whether that was last night in the semi-final or the final, as it's almost been a perfect progression in some ways,' he told Sky Sports on Thursday morning.

'Either conceding the first goal, having to go to a penalty shootout or a player getting sent off there's different things you have to overcome if you want to win a tournament, title or cup competition.

'I think Italy have been through it against Spain [in the semi-final] and Austria [in the last 16] where they were very fortunate with an offside decision - so you need these little things to go for you.

'I always felt something would happen in the next couple of games that England would have to overcome so fingers crossed that was it and it's not Sunday as well.'
