Yankees starter Domingo German scratched due to root canal
New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday at Seattle because he needed an unexpected root canal.
"He had an emergency root canal late this morning, early this afternoon," manager Aaron Boone told reporters. "Domingo is here and actually feeling a lot better."
In his place, the Yankees tabbed righty Nick Nelson as their starter to face the Mariners.
Boone added that German "probably" would be available to pitch later Wednesday night if the Yankees needed him.
German, two years removed from an 18-4 season, is 4-5 with a 4.50 ERA over 15 starts this year. The 28-year-old has struck out 68 batters and walked 19 over 76 innings.
Nelson will make his second career start in German's place. In eight appearances (one start) this year before Wednesday, the second-year major-leaguer was 0-2 with 20 strikeouts, nine walks and a 9.75 ERA. He only lasted one inning in his first career start April 16 in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, when he gave up two runs.
