Haji Ali Dargah

To prevent waterlogging in south Mumbai, including Gol Deul, Alankar Cinema, Alibhai Premji Marg and Mumbai Central, BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to construct underground tunnels/tanks. It has also decided to construct a new pumping station in place of the existing Haji Ali pumping station or at the area near the garden adjacent to it. A consultant (One NJS Engineers India Private Limited) has been appointed to study both the projects before implementing them. The report will focus on feasibility and if there would be any problem while laying/constructing underground utilities.

After the July 26, 2005, deluge in Mumbai, the state government fact-finding committee, headed by Madhav Chitale, examined the causes of the extreme weather event and suggested solutions. However, the three options suggested were not feasible or technically possible. Therefore, the civic body made a proposal to construct underground tunnels to collect rainwater, which would help prevent waterlogging in areas such as Mumbai Central Parcel Depot, Rusi Mehta, Guilder Lane and Wellington Golf Course during monsoon.

It has also decided to construct a new pumping station at the site of the existing Haji Ali pumping station or the space near the adjoining garden. These projects are expected to cost the BMC Rs 225 crore.
