Veteran Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar passed away early on Wednesday morning in Mumbai. He was 98.
The first superstar of Bollywood was admitted to Hinduja Hospital last month and the doctors said his treatment was ongoing for the last 3-4 months.
According to media reports, he suffered from advanced prostate cancer that had spread in other organs of his body.
As per a report in the Indian Express, Dilip Kumar had water in the pleural cavity, and he suffered kidney failure.
He required blood transfusion multiple times. The doctors carried out the last transfusion but it did not help.
The actor was bedridden for several months and had become unresponsive in the last few days. He also suffered a drop in blood pressure and haemoglobin towards the end.
The doctor further informed that the cancer spread made it difficult for them to treat him.
Dr Jalil Parkar, the pulmonologist who treated him at Hinduja Hospital said, "We gave him all possible treatments and tried our best. We wanted him to complete 100 years of his lifetime. However, age-related complications came in the way."
During Dilip Kumar's prolonged ailment his wife Saira Banu Ji stayed with him 24X7 in hospital and never left his side, Dr. Parkar added.
Meanwhile, mortal remains of the late veteran actor were taken to his residence in Bandra.
Faisal Farooqui, a family friend and official spokesperson of Dilip Kumar, informed that the family has decided the late actor's burial will be performed at Juhu graveyard in Santacruz at 5 pm on Wednesday.
Speaking of Dilip Kumar's contribution to Indian cinema, his career had spanned over six decades.
He acted in over 65 films in his career and is known for his iconic roles in movies like 'Devdas', 'Naya Daur', 'Mughal-e-Azam', 'Ganga Jamuna', 'Kranti', and 'Karma'. His last film was 'Qila', which was released in 1998.
He is now survived by his wife and veteran actor Saira Banu.
