Australia is set for a SOAKING this weekend with the country shivering through its coldest start to a morning so far this year – so what's the forecast in your area?

  • Sydney could see as much as 20mm of intense rainfall on Friday in some parts
  • Fierce winds predicted in Harbour City on Saturday, with rain tipped for Brisbane
  • The likes of Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart will be cold, but no rain is expected

Winter has well and truly arrived in Australia, with testing temperatures and plenty of rain predicted for the next few days across most parts of the nation.

For Sydney residents, showers are predicted from Friday until Sunday, which isn't good news for millions of people currently in the middle of a Covid lockdown - which was formally extended a week until July 16 by NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian on Wednesday.

Those who call the Harbour City home also endured their coldest morning of winter on Wednesday morning, with temperatures as low as 5.5C in some parts.

Bureau of Meteorology expert Jonathan How said umbrellas and plenty of warm clothing will be recommended in most capital cities.

'Sydney will experience a cold front on Friday, with as much as 20mm rain. And the winds could be ferocious on Saturday.

'Perth won't escape the harsh conditions either, and high seas are also predicted, especially over the weekend.

'Adelaide and Hobart will be cold first thing most mornings, but they should miss the rain, as will Melbourne.'

Canberra saw its coldest day for 12 years with the maximum temperature just 6.3C on Tuesday.

On Thursday morning, the mercury could drop to as low as -4C in the nation's capital, with the peak temperature over the weekend just 13C.

The weather forecast is equally bleak for Brisbane, with showers predicted for Thursday and Friday.

Saturday could also see rain of up to 10mm in the Sunshine State.

Perth is tipped to see a rain deluge over the next 72 hours, with wet weather also predicted for early next week.
