Chandigarh, July 6
A 70-year-old woman and her 14-year-old grandson were killed, while four others were injured after the auto they were travelling in was hit by a speeding tipper near Dhanas this morning.
The victims were coming from Dhanas and going to the grain market in Sector 26 to purchase vegetables when the mishap took place. The tipper driver escaped, leaving the vehicle behind.
Bhagwati and her grandson Chanchal were seriously injured in the accident.
They were rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, in another auto. They were declared brought dead at the hospital.
The other victims were identified as Bhagwati’s son Sanju (34), Raj Kumar (45), auto driver Vinod (48) and Rahul (16).
They were rushed to the hospital in PCR vehicles. All injured were undergoing treatment, said a police official.
Sources said Bhagwati was a vegetable vendor and her grandson also used to help her in the work.
A case has been registered at the Sector 11 police station. The police have initiated an investigation and impounded both vehicles involved in the mishap.
