West Bengal: Man held for assault on TMC MLA Madan Mitra

KOLKATA: Baranagar police arrested a man for allegedly assaulting former state transport minister and Kamarhati TMC MLA Madan Mitra at a restaurant in Dunlop on the northern fringes of the city on Monday evening. Police said the accused, identified as Pradip Dey, harassed Mitra inside the restaurant near Dunlop More. Mitra went to the restaurant to have a dinner along with some of his party colleagues.
Dey has been remanded in police custody for five days after being produced in a Barrackpore court on Tuesday.
The exact motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. “Several inconsistencies were found in his statements. The accused would be further interrogated in this connection,” said a senior police officer of the Barrackpore commissionerate.
