Yousuf Khan, better known across India by his screen name Dilip
Kumar, first appeared in a film titled Jwar Bhata in 1944. By his own account, the next two films Pratima and Milan also failed to make a major impact. But the 1947 release Jugnu kicked off an acting career as a leading man that lasted over four decades.
Having made his mark in the industry in the second half of the 1940s, Kumar would enjoy his biggest hits over the next two decades - between the 1940s and 50s. However, unlike other top actors of the era, Kumar prided himself on not spreading himself too thin over films.
The only calendar year in which Kumar appeared in five films was 1948, the year after his first hit. After that the only year in which he appeared in more than three films was the year 1955.
As a result of his work stretching over decades, Kumar worked with a wide variety of directors, 62 in total, which included four guest appearances. However, despite a career spread over multiple decades, the most he ended up working with a director was three films.
The only directors the actor worked with at least three times in leading roles are Bimal Roy, SU Sunny, Nitin Bose, Mehboob Khan in the peak of his career. In the 1980s when he made his return to screen as a father figure, Kumar worked thrice with
Subhash Ghai.
His work in term of genre - can do if we can fill genre-based data for the chart
Over the years, he won 8 Filmfare Best Actor awards, the 1994 Dadasaheb Phalke award, as well as the civilian awards
Padma Bhushan and
Padma Vibhushan. He also received Pakistan’s highest civilian award.
What highlights Kumar’s acting prowess is the fact that he won his first award in the 1950s and his last one in 1982. The 1970s, which was a lean decade for the actor, is the only period in which he didn’t win the award.
