On Tuesday, aggrieved protesters took the streets, closing off the N2 and R102 near Hibberdene on KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast. They used burning tyres and logs to barricade the roads.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele told News24 that the protest action was over a water shortage in Umtwalume, within the Umzumbe Municipality area.

"Approximately 1 000 people blocked the N2 and R102," Mbhele said.

Video footage of the protest shows a motorist unable to pass the burning barricades.

No damages or injuries were reported.

One person was arrested for public violence and possession of a dangerous weapon.

"He will appear in court soon," Mbhele said.
