1. ED arrests NCP leader Eknath Khadse's son-in-law in Pune land deal case
The ED has arrested NCP leader Eknath Khadse's son-in-law Girish Chaudhary in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a 2016 purchase of a government land plot in Pune, officials said today. They said Chaudhary was arrested on Tuesday night after being questioned at length in the case at the office of the central investigative agency in south Mumbai. The officials alleged that Chaudhary was not cooperative during the questioning. A special court that tries cases registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has remanded him to Enforcement Directorate's custody till July 12.
2. Legendary actor Dilip Kumar passes away at 98 after long illness
Legendary actor Dilip Kumar died today morning after prolonged illness, his family and doctors treating him said. He was 98. Kumar, known to generations of film-goers as 'tragedy king', had been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Hinduja Hospital, since Tuesday. "He passed away due to prolonged illness at 7.30 am," Dr Jalil Parkar, who had been treating Kumar told news agency PTI. "With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab. We are from God and to Him we return," family friend Faisal Farooqui posted from the actor's Twitter handle.
3. Calcutta HC imposes fine of Rs 5 lakhs on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
The Calcutta High Court today imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakhs on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for putting the judiciary in a bad light. The Calcutta High Court's single bench led by Justice Kausik Chanda passed the order while hearing Banerjee's election petition challenging BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari's victory from the Nandigram Constituency in the recently held state assembly polls. At the outset of the argument, Justice Chanda refused to withdraw the case but later changed his decision to say that he was recused from the case. Banerjee has also moved an application to change the judge in the case and alleged that Justice Chanda has connections with BJP.
4. Maharashtra: Former Cong Minister Kripashankar Singh joins BJP
Former Congress Minister Kripashankar Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Mumbai today. Singh joined the BJP in the presence of former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and state party president Chandrakant Patil at its headquarters in Mumbai. Singh had served as the head of the Mumbai Congress from 2008 to 2012. He resigned from Congress in 2019 in the run-up to the state Assembly elections. Singh’s move comes in the run up to the elections to the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) slated for 2022 for which BJP has already launched Mission 2022 with a resolve to defeat Shiv Sena.
5. Sensex ends above 53,000 for first time
Equity benchmark Sensex jumped 194 points to close at a fresh record on Wednesday, tracking gains in index heavyweights HDFC twins, Tata Steel and ICICI Bank. Closing above the 53,000 mark for the first time, the 30-share BSE index jumped 193.58 points or 0.37 per cent to 53,054.76. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty rose 61.40 points or 0.39 per cent to its fresh record peak of 15,879.65.
