A police dog sniffed out a 12-year-old girl who went missing during Tropical Storm Elsa, reuniting her with family in southwest Florida.

Mercy, the Lee County Sheriff’s bloodhound K9, tracked the girl for more than a half mile through thick woods in severe weather, officials wrote on Facebook Wednesday.

“Thankfully, Mercy found her and brought her safely back home to her family,” the sheriff’s office said.

Mercy is part of the county’s ReUnite Program, a search and rescue operation for at-risk individuals, sheriffs said.

Tropical Storm Elsa slammed into the Gulf Coast Wednesday with sustained winds of 65 mph, before weakening and heading to Georgia.

Florida officials said the state was spared from significant damage.

One person was killed in Jacksonville when a tree fell and struck two cars, authorities said.
