CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu water resources minister S Duraimurugan on Wednesday said the state government would take all measures to stall the Karnataka government’s Mekedatu dam project “within the legal framework”.
In a statement, Duraimurugan said the state government would strongly oppose the attempts of Karnataka government to build a dam in Mekedatu or in any other place. “In a letter to Karnataka chief minister, Tamil Nadu chief minister urged him not to pursue the Mekedatu dam project since it would jeopardize the interests of farmers who are dependent on Cauvery water to cultivate short-term kuruvai and long-term samba crop in lakhs of acres in the state,” the senior minister said.
Duraimurugan was responding to Yediyurappa’s statement in Bengaluru on Tuesday that his government would implement the project “within the legal framework” and none could stop it.
