SURAT: A 41-year-old man, who was unemployed since the lockdown last year, ended his life at his home in Nanpura on Sunday.
Nimish Shah,
who lived near Navdi Ovara, consumed poisonous liquid in the afternoon and died immediately. Police said that Shah was mentally broken since he lost his job and would often hallucinate that he was suffering from Covid-19.
“Firstly, he lost the job and was not able to find work and due to ongoing pandemic, he would feel that he contracted the virus,” said a police official. Shah had called ambulance twice and tried getting himself admitted at New Civil Hospital but was sent home both times as his report turned out to be Covdi-19 negative. The deceased had written notes five times and tried hanging himself from the ceiling fan but had failed.
On Sunday, he wrote another note and consumed the liquid. Police said that he mentioned his unemployment in the note and was not able to take the dwindling economic crisis at his home. Shah’s mother Mala works as domestic help, but her income was not enough. Before the lockdown he worked at a jewellery shop, but he was removed and he could not find a suitable job later. “The mother-son duo were the only residents in their house. The deceased has a sister, but she lives in Rajasthan,” a police official said.
