Wales fullback Halfpenny will need surgery on injured knee
CARDIFF, Wales (AP) - Wales confirmed fullback Leigh Halfpenny will miss the summer tests against Argentina over the next two weekends after damaging a left knee ligament on Saturday.
Halfpenny will need surgery, the Welsh Rugby Union added on Tuesday.
His left knee buckled as he tried to step off it at pace in the first minute against Canada in his 100th test appearance, 96th for Wales. Down for more than five minutes, he was in tears and carried off the field. The WRU did not elaborate on the injury following a scan.
Halfpenny tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee in 2015 against Italy and was out for nine months.
Coach Wayne Pivac, previously, and assistant Stephen Jones said there was more international rugby in 32-year-old Halfpenny, and he was determined to reach 100 tests for Wales.
"Leigh is mentally tough," Jones said. "He'll do everything in his control to make sure he recovers and comes back as soon as he can. The guy is a fantastic professional, he's a class act. The standards he set and how he pushes things forward ... he's ambitious to improve all the time."
