Actor turned politician Shatrughan Sinha and his wife, politician Poonam Sinha have been married for 40 blissful years. The couple is blessed with three children- daughter and actor Sonakshi Sinha and sons, Luv Sinha and Kush Sinha. But did you know that once Shatrughan’s late mother-in-law rejected his marriage proposal for Poonam? Yes, it's true!
Recently, Shatrughan appeared on ‘Indian Idol 12’ with his wife, where a contestant called him handsome. To this, the actor joked and said Poonam will disagree. He also gave an anecdote about his marriage sharing that Poonam’s mother rejected his proposal because of his dark skin colour.
Shatrughan said, “Maine apni shaadi ke liye proposal bheja tha. Toh meri late and great mother-in-law ne, unhone mujhe nakaar kar di tha, ek dum reject kar diya tha (I had sent a marriage proposal but my late and great mother-in-law rejected me outright).”
He further added, “Wo kehte the kyun main isse apni beti ki shaadi karau, Meri beti itni gori-chiti sundar hai. Tumhara bhai itna kaaliya hai… In dono ko saath khada karke colour photograph bhi kheechenge toh black and white ka effect aayega. Ye kehke reject kar diya tha (She told my brother that her daughter is very fair and beautiful but Shatru’s skin tone is so black that if she and Poonam were ever clicked together even a colour photo would look like a black and white photo).Shatrughan has previously also talked about this incident. During an appearance on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ in 2019, he shared that his elder brother Ram Sinha and director NN Sippy visited Poonam’s house to meet her family and to ask for her hand. The actor revealed that not only did his late mother-in-law rejected the proposal but was also angry at Ram and Sippy for coming with it.
