Vice-President remembers Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary

New Delhi, Jul 6 (UNI) Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday paid homage to Bharatiya Jan Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary, saying he continues to inspire many.

"My respectful tributes to the visionary statesman & devout patriot, Dr #SyamaPrasadMookerjee on his birth anniversary today. He was an eminent educationist, humanitarian & above all, a campaigner for national unity & integrity. His legendary personality continues to inspire many," the Vice-President Secretariat tweeted.

"He sacrificed his life for the nation's integrity, so it is the responsibility of every generation to keep it intact," he said in another tweet in Hindi.

Mookerjee was a politician, barrister and academician, who served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet.

He then quit the Congress and founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, which later evolved into Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He was born on July 6, 1901, in Kolkata, West Bengal. In 1953, he went to Kashmir where he was arrested and later died under detention on June 23, 1953.
