The Sharks, who've never gotten more than a draw against the British and Irish Lions, want to make history against rugby's most famous tourists.
As Natal, the Durbanites mustered a 3-3 draw in the 1924 tour game held in Pietermaritzburg.
Head coach Sean Everitt's men face the Lions at Ellis Park on Wednesday, looking to make a step further by winning, something the province has never achieved.
"We spoke to the team about the fact that it's an opportunity to make history," said Everitt.
"They will forever be in the record books if they achieve that on Wednesday, so that's the seriousness with which we're taking this game.
"As long as you take to the field and give it your all, there's always going to be an opportunity to win a game like this.
"Our guys are under no false pretences of [how tough] the challenge is that's facing them. They certainly know that if we put it together, stop their momentum and power game, we'll be in with a shot."
The Lions dismantled Joburg's Lions 56-14 last Saturday in an effortless display of power and precision.
Welsh wing Josh Adams scored four of the easiest tries he'll get in a red jersey.
Adams won't feature against the Sharks after Lions head coach Warren Gatland went with Duhan van der Merwe and Anthony Watson at left and right wing, respectively.
The visitors are no less formidable for their opposite Sharks wingers, No 14 Werner Kok and No 11 Thaakir Abrahams.
However, Everitt said the lads drew inspiration from the 2009 display where Lwazi Mvovo announced himself by hauling down Irish great Brian O'Driscoll, stopping him from scoring a certain try.
"We've seen a lot of highlights packages on social media and SuperSport, and the guys sat keenly in the team room the other day watching the 2009 game with interest," said Everitt.
"There were some flashbacks of Lwazi Mvovo catching Brian O'Driscoll from behind, which put Lwazi on the international map.
"The guys are really excited, and we're privileged to be part of the Sharks and its proud history. The guys are looking forward to making history."
