Sic drug peddlers held in Kashmir; contraband recovered

Srinagar, Jul 5 (UNI) Police on Monday arrested six drug peddlers and recovered huge cache of contraband from them in four different places in Kashmir valley.

A police spokesperson said that following specific information about transportation of drugs, a checkpoint was established near Bilal crossing in south Kashmir district of Anantnag. “Police intercepted a motorcycle at the checkpoint and during checking recovered 7160 capsules of banned drugs,” he said.

He said the motorcyclist Kowsar Ahmad Khanday and his pillion mater Bilal Ahmad Naikoo were immediately taken into custody.

He said in another incident a vehicle was intercepted at Mirbaraz on Srinagar-Jammu national highway. “Police recovered 12 kgs of Poppy Straw and 700 grams of Charas from the vehicle during checking,” he said, adding the driver, identified as Mohammad Rafiq Barger, was arrested.

The spokesperson said that acting on specific information, police intercepted an Oil Tanker at a checking at Choimulla Qazigund on the national highway. “During checking, police recovered 2 kg of poppy,” he said, adding the driver was immediately taken into custody.

In Ganderbal, he said a suspect was intercepted by a police party at a checkpoint at Banday Bagh. “During checking, officers were able to recover 100 gms of Charas from his possession,” he said, adding the accused, identified as Mohammad Shahid Gurra, was immediately taken into custody.

He said cases in all the incidents have been registered under relevant sections of law at respective police stations and further investigations have been initiated. “Community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood. Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law,” he said.

“Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” he added.
