Volkswagen (VW)
is aiming to produce 100,000 auto components by using 3D printing technique in
collaboration with its technology partners Siemens and HP Inc. Volkswagen uses
a process known as binder jetting to manufacture components at the company’s
main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. It is currently the only carmaker to use this
3D printing technology in its production process.
Volkswagen had
invested a lot in this process for the past five years. The company also
entered into a software partnership with Siemens and expanded its existing
collaboration with HP Inc.’s printing business.
VW is currently
exploring the full-scale use of binder jetting and intends to learn all about
the different components which can be economically and quickly produced. It is
also exploring the use of additive manufacturing to support the digital
transformation of production.
The company aims
to produce up to 100,000 components per year using 3D printing at Wolfsburg by
2025.
The first
components made using the binder jetting process went to Osnabruck for
certification. They weigh 50% less than conventional steel components.
Volkswagen has also conducted crash tests on 3D-printed metallic vehicle
components that proved successful.
