A brave dad has drowned while desperately trying to save his nine-year-old daughter from a powerful rip.
The incident unfolded when the young girl became caught in rough surf at 1pm on Monday at Surf Beach in Batemans Bay, New South Wales.
After noticing his daughter in trouble, the 48-year-old threw himself into the water to save her, but soon became caught in the rip himself.
The little girl was able to swim to safety with the help of passersby, but her dad could not be saved.

It marks the fourth drowing death in just 48 hours in New South Wales, after three fishermen died when their boat capsized in Bellambi.
'Unfortunately in the act of trying to save his daughter, the father has perished and his daughter was able to make her way to shore with the help of some bystanders,' Surf Lifesaving NSW CEO Steve Pearce said.
'Some really tragic circumstances.'
The girl was rushed to Batemans Bay Hospital and is understood to be in a stable condition.
