New Delhi
The government
and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced the
extension of the deadline for the mandatory installation of dual front airbags
in existing car models. The revised deadline is now December 31, 2021, an
extension of four months.
The Society of
Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) requested more time to implement the
dual airbags rule on existing car models in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To ensure
passenger safety in cars, the Indian government announced the mandatory provision of dual
airbags in all cars manufactured and sold in India. For newer
models, the rule was made mandatory from April 1, 2021.
The rule for
dual airbags is based on suggestions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road
Safety. The airbags are required to meet the AIS 145 standard under the Bureau
of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications.
The addition of
a new airbag is expected to directly affect the pricing of lower-segment cars
in India.
