BHUBANESWAR: The higher education department on Monday asked all teaching and non-teaching staff of degree colleges and universities under its jurisdiction to attend duty on all working days with effect from Tuesday. Previously, 50 per cent of the staff were attending the duty on roster basis. This decision is taken keeping the coming examination and publication of results in mind.

Department secretary Saswat Mishra in a letter to vice chancellors of state public universities and principals of degree colleges stated that Covid-19 situation has relatively improved compared to the situation prevailed in mid-April this year. In view of this, 50 per cent roster attendance system for teaching and non-teaching employees had been introduced in higher educational institutions since April 19.

Mishra said a lot of important work now remains pending due to thin attendance of staff for almost two and a half months. These institutions must conduct the final semester/year examination of 2020-21 UG/PG final semester/year students in online mode and publish results at the earliest so that the career of these students does not get affected. Examinations of other semester students have to be conducted one after another to ensure that these students also do not suffer much due to a delayed academic calendar, he added.

Keeping these issues in mind, the department has withdrawn the 50 per cent roster attendance system. “All teaching and non-teaching employees of higher educational institutions have to attend duty on all working days with effect from July 6,” said Mishra in his letter.

The department clarified that instruction of the general administration department regarding closure of government offices on Saturdays is not applicable to degree colleges and universities. However, these institutions will remain closed on Saturdays provided there is Covid-19 related weekend shutdown declared in that district/town/city.

Employees of the institutions will strictly follow all Covid-19 guidelines including wearing face masks, washing hands properly, maintaining social distancing and self-isolation/quarantine.
