There was some cheer for the locals in the conditions chase at Tramore as the Henry de Bromhead-trained Ornua made every post a winning one under Rachael Blackmore.
Appropriately sponsored by Dooley’s Fish & Chips At Tramore, the 6/4 could not be reeled in by his rivals despite being less than fluent at several of his obstacles in the two mile five furlongs contest.
Snow Falcon, the Noel Meade-trained 5/4 market leader, gave chase throughout and did his best to close the gap on the leader but Seán Flanagan’s mount was readily held by a length. A winner at Aintree in his younger days, this was his sixth success over the larger obstacles and De Bromhead intimated that Galway would be on his charge’s agenda later this summer.
Flanagan got some compensation later when the David O’Brien-trained Quirt Evans (4/5 fav) claimed the Make A Day Trip To Tramore Maiden Hurdle in convincing fashion.
The market leader travelled well before taking the lead on the downhill run to the second last and galloping clear without too much effort to prevail by six lengths from Optional Mix.
The features novice hurdle over two miles went the way of the John Ryan-trained Ferdia which made it two wins from three starts in the hands of Danny Mullins.
Having travelled in behind the leaders, the son of Dylan Thomas (3/1) got a dream run on the inner approaching the penultimate obstacle and was soon in a share of the lead.
Mullins got down to work but didn’t have to be at his strongest to edge out Schone Aussicht (4/1) by just over two lengths, with 5/4 favourite Raven Rule dropping away tamely.
Champion jockey Paul Townend was on the mark in the opening two-mile handicap chase when steering Edward O’Grady’s Downthecellar (11/4 fav) to complete a hat-trick of wins, the pair digging deep to beat She Tops The Lot by half a length.
At Limerick, Aidan O’Brien and Seamie Heffernan combined to land a closing double courtesy of victories for King Of The Castle (4/9) and National Ballet (11/8).
