The Nationals had three players named to their first MLB All-Star Game on Sunday, as Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner and Juan Soto were selected to the Midsummer Classic.
Schwarber had a red-hot month of June, clubbing 16 home runs over a 19-game stretch, batting .329 during that period. The Middletown, Ohio, native is currently on the 10-day Injured List as he’s nursing a hamstring injury that he suffered on July 2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He will not play in the All-Star Game.
Turner hasn’t lit up the statistical categories like Schwarber has this season, but the shortstop hit for the cycle on his birthday on June 30 against the Tampa Bay Rays. This season, Turner is batting .318 with 14 home runs, 100 hits and 38 RBIs.
Soto, who was a finalist to start the All-Star Game, is batting .278 this season with nine home runs.
Max Scherzer will miss the All-Star Game for the first time since 2012, snapping a seven-year streak.
Boston has the most All-Stars for the first time since 2009, sending five. Designated hitter J.D. Martinez, starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and reliever Matt Barnes were chosen to join a pair of starters: shortstop Xander Bogaerts and third baseman Rafael Devers.
Houston and Toronto have four All-Stars each.
