No other activities and institutions have been allowed to reopen. Delhi Metro’s request to increase the allowed capacity from 50% has also not been considered this week.
Schools, universities and colleges will remain shut, as will cinema halls and swimming pools.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has asked for relaxation due to long queues outside stations. Currently, an eight-coach train that can carry up to 2400 passengers can run with around 250-300 people as the metro has been allowed to operate at 50 per cent seating capacity.
Moreover, standing commutes are also not allowed.
On June 14, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had written to the Delhi government, urging “further relaxations” to tackle the situation. Last Thursday, DMRC issued a statement, saying it “regrets the inconvenience caused to its esteemed passengers due to these restrictions.”
Delhi was under a lockdown between April 19 and May 30. The city started unlocking in phases from May 31 with the permission to factories within industrial areas and construction activities to resume. On June 7, markets, malls and the Delhi Metro services were allowed to open at 50 per cent capacity, and from June 14, the 50 per cent cap was removed in the case of markets and malls.
