My COVID Story: My father was the only patient out of 9 to survive after being put on ventilator in the hospital
Karan Nagpal had a terrible encounter with COVID during the first wave but the second wave impacted his father and he was admitted in ICU. He fought hard and long but finally managed to fight the virus. Here is his story

I am Karan Nagpal and I am sharing the story of my father Pradeep Kumar Nagpal.
I shared my story with TOI that I too touched death in November when in the first wave I was hospitalized due to falling oxygen nos, and I was shifted to ICU to stabilize my condition. After 10 days of hospitalization and 1 month of rest, I was back to work

I thought it's the last time I am hearing COVID in my life, but I was wrong. In the month of April when I planned to visit my parents on my birthday, everything was fine but one day, my father Pradeep Nagpal who had taken both doses of Covishield (it had been 7 days of the second dose), travelled to New Delhi in a train from Jaipur. All our family members asked him to go in his car but due to the farmer’s protest, he chose to go by train..

On 10th April he got his first symptom of fever followed by cold and cough and by 15th April his oxygen level was 88%. We rushed him to nearby Manipal hospital in Jaipur, where he got emergency treatment and by then I came to meet him on 23rd April. As I had already got antibodies I tried to give him plasma, but the very next day he was on a ventilator, in the prone position.

The doctor did the video call to make us see him and we were devastated. My sister and I used to wait hours outside the Waiting area, so the doctor could give us any hope of improvement but all they said was that he is critical.

They called me one day and gave me his belongings and asked just to pray to God, I remember that night, we all cried but never lost hope in God. He was on a ventilator for 22 days and faced many complications like falling BP, fluctuating oxygen levels and converted into just bones due to muscle atrophy and couldn’t even walk, but finally our prayers were answered and he was shifted from ventilator to normal oxygen.

So on 29th May. he got discharged from the hospital and is still battling with fatigue and muscle atrophy, and learning to walk again.

He saw me in ICU but still did not learn that COVID can be so dangerous, now we just don't want him to step out of the house.

As per doctors, 9 patients were on ventilators and only my father survived. We are so thankful to doctors and everyone who kept praying for my father so he could reunite with his family
