MUMBAI: A 21-year-old rape accused, who had fled from police custody in Mumbai's Kandivali area, was tracked down to Vapi in Gujarat and was re-arrested.
Avinash Yadav, was trying to flee to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh, police said.
Yadav was in a relationship with a 17-year-old girl. After the two eloped, her family lodged a complaint against him at Charkop police station.
As sex with a minor tantamount to rape, police registered an FIR against Yadav on rape charges.
On June 26, Yadav was tracked down and held. He was remanded in police custody till June 30 by a court.
On June 30, Yadav was first taken for an antigen test in a police vehicle. He fled from the custody while he was then being escorted to the court.
"The other end of Yadav's handcuff was held by a policeman. When the vehicle halted at a signal in Kandivali, Yadav jumped out and fled," said an official.
Yadav went to his sister's place and requested her for help.
His brother-in-law then decided to drive him down to UP in his truck.
Meanwhile, police reached Yadav's sister's house and questioned her. She broke down and admitted that her husband was driving down her brother to UP.
A police team then set up nakabandis at various locations and intercepted the truck at Vapi on July 2.
Yadav was arrested and handed over to Kandivali police where a case had been registered in connection with his escape.
