- Bok lock RG Snyman looks set to miss the British & Irish Lions series after undergoing a skin graft operation.
- It follows the fire pit accident in Ireland where team-mate Damian de Allende was also involved in.
- Bok assistant coach Deon Davids added that more clarity will be given within a "day or two" regarding the rib injury suffered by lock Eben Etzebeth against Georgia.
Springbok lock RG Snyman is likely to miss the upcoming series against the British & Irish Lions series after undergoing a skin graft operation.
This follows last month's bizarre fire pit accident in Ireland where Snyman, centre Damian de Allende and two of their Munster team-mates, Mike Haley and CJ Stander, suffered burns.
The players required treatment for the incident before Snyman and De Allende could return to South Africa to report for Springbok duty.
A local specialist has since determined that burns to Snyman's knee had been more severe than initially believed and Springbok assistant coach Deon Davids confirmed on Sunday that the lock had undergone another medical procedure.
"RG Snyman is currently out of the squad. He's not with us, he went for a skin graft operation. Obviously he will start the process of rehabilitation, and as he recovers and we get medical updates, he will return back into the squad," Davids told reporters in an online media briefing.
The coach added that it was unlikely that Snyman would face the British & Irish Lions but expected the player to be ready later in the year.
"At this stage I think there's [only] a small chance that he will be part of the British & Irish Lions Test series. But he will definitely return to the group for the remainder of the year's Test matches that lie ahead in the Rugby Championship and the end of the year tour," Davids said.
Afrikaans newspaper Rapport indicated on Sunday that De Allende's wounds were not as severe as Snyman's, but the midfielder has not participated in any Springbok training sessions to date out of fear of infection. He is expected to be ready for the Lions series though, with the first Test scheduled for Cape Town Stadium on 24 July.
Meanwhile, Davids also provided an injury update on Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth, who left the field with a rib injury during Friday's 40-9 win over Georgia in Pretoria.
"Eben Etzebeth got a rib injury on Friday... he was assessed and was quite fine this morning. The medical staff is still busy looking at him for a day or two. The head coach (Jacques Nienaber) will then make a decision in terms of his availability for this weekend. [But] we'll only have a final call in a day or two..."
The rest of the Bok squad came through the Georgia match relatively unscathed, Davids added.
"There are a few players with bumps and bruises but they are [being] medically assessed. At this stage, hopefully, we will have a full contingent to select from. Within the next day or two we will be quite clear in terms of who's going to take the field."
The second Test against Georgia is scheduled for Ellis Park in Johannesburg this coming Friday (9 July).
