Nagpur: The Nagpur University has once again initiated the process to appoint full-time registrar after the post fell vacant in June 2018.
This time, 42 applications were received till the last date on May 21. Of these, 38 have been shortlisted including 17 from the previous round. However, interviews couldn’t take place due to Covid lockdown.
As the unlock has begun, the shortlisted candidates would be appearing for interview before the selection panel on July 5 and 6.
NU finance and accounts officer Raju Hiwase, who has been given a six-month extension, is a surprise entrant this time. Incumbent dean of science and technology Rajesh Shingru, who is considered close to a BJP heavyweight, is also in the race. Director of students welfare Abhay Mudgal, history professor Shyam Koretti and pharmacy professor Rajendra Kakde too are among the prominent candidates.
After the post fell vacant, additional charge was handed over to LIT professor Neeraj Khaty, who was appointed full-time through regular selection process in September 2019. However, Khaty had refused to join fearing political backlash.
This year, the state government appointed deputy registrar Anil Hirekhan on deputation to the post in January. The MVA government’s sudden move had left vice-chancellor Subhash Chaudhari baffled as he was reportedly clueless about the decision.
The NU failed to get a full-time registrar as the Shikshan Manch had allegedly insisted on appointing its candidate whom the then VC SP Kane found unfit for the job and preferred Khaty after the first recruitment drive in September 2019.
The manch’s earlier candidate for registrar’s post has got a top post and it remains to be seen whom it now wishes to place in the registrar’s chair.
A fresh advertisement, allegedly in violation of norms, too was issued by Kane soon after the failed recruitment drive in September 2019. Though many applications were received once again, the process never took off due to lockdown and the NU had to re-advertise the post in April this year.
This time, the NU has allowed previous applicants to update their biodata while they need not pay the fee again.
The upcoming interviews will be keenly watched by academic fraternity as political equations have changed in the state.

It now remains to be seen how far VC Chaudhari goes to oblige the saffron outfit which would tr to corner yet another post in the univiersity
