Baby grazed by bullet in drive-by Minneapolis shooting

Jul. 3—Police say a nine-month-old child was shot and injured while in the back of a vehicle in North Minneapolis on Friday night, the fourth child to be shot in the past few months in that city.

The bullet grazed the child on an "extremity" and the injury was not believed to be life-threatening.

According to police, at about 6:43 p.m. police were responding to ShotSpotter reports of shots fired near Colfax Avenue North and 34th Avenue when 911 calls came in that someone in a vehicle had been shot and was on their way to the hospital.

A few minutes later, officials at North Memorial Medical Center told police an infant had arrived at the emergency room with a gunshot wound.

The string of shootings injuring children began in April when Ladavionne Garrett Jr., 10, was shot in a drive-by shooting. He is still hospitalized in critical condition. His shooting occurred just weeks before two fatal shootings of children in North Minneapolis: 6-year-old Aniya Allen, who was riding in a car on May 17 with her mother when she was shot, and 9-year-old Trinity Ottoson-Smith, who died after being wounded in a drive-by shooting on May 15 while playing on a trampoline with friends.

Police encouraged anyone with information on any of these shootings to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Tips may be submitted electronically at crimestoppersmn.org. All tips are anonymous and people providing information leading to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for a financial reward, police said.

There is a combined $30,000 reward fund for information about the first three child shootings. The fund includes up to $10,000 for tips leading to arrests in each case.
