A drone was spotted hovering over the Indian High Commission in Islamabad last Saturday night. It coincided with a drone attack on an Indian Air Force base in Jammu later that night. The drone is believed to have snooped on a diplomatic event held at the mission, according to preliminary investigations of the embassy.
“A drone was spotted over the premises of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad on June 26. This has been taken up officially with Pakistan. We expect Pakistan to investigate the incident and prevent recurrence of such breach of security,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said on Friday. “India has zero tolerance policy against terrorism. All countries must take action and end terror havens and financing. We call upon Pakistan to end to cross-border terrorism and bring perpetrators of Mumbai and Pathankot attacks to justice,” he said.
The incident is a breach of the Geneva Convention and a strongly worded note verbale was shared with Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The security breach by the drone at the high-security Indian High Commission inside Pakistani soil is likely to increase tension between the neighbours.
BSF had spotted a quadcopter from Pakistan trying to enter Indian territory along the international border from Jammu's Arnia sector early on Friday. Over the past couple of years there have been reports of Pakistan using drones to drop weapons across the border. BSF has frequently reported drone sightings and has shot down some in the last few months.
