Chennai, July 3 (UNI) Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence
Unit today seized 633 gms of gold worth Rs 31 lakh and arrested
two people--a passenger from Sharjah and a receiver--at the Anna
International airport here.
A release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said
based on intelligence, one Akilan (27) of Thanjavur who arrived
from Sharjah by Air Arabia flight was intercepted at the exit on
suspicion of carrying gold.
On personal search, three bundles of gold paste weighing 715 gm
were recovered from rectum. On extraction 633 grams of 24k purity
gold valued at Rs.31 lakh was recovered and seized under the
Customs Act.
Based on the information provide dby him, the officials took Akilan
outside the airport where another person who came to receive the
gold was also arrested. The receiver was identified as Mohamed
Uvais (23) of Ramanathapuram.
Both the carrier and the receiver have been arrested.
