Report: Reggie Theus to become coach, AD at Bethune-Cookman
Former NBA and college star Reggie Theus is expected to be named coach and athletic director at Bethune-Cookman, The Undefeated reported Saturday.
This will be Theus' third stint as a college head coach. He has a 94-128 record in seven seasons, going 41-23 in two seasons at New Mexico State (2005-07) and 53-105 in five seasons at Cal State Northridge (2013-18). New Mexico State made the 2007 NCAA Tournament under Theus.
Theus, 63, also coached the NBA's Sacramento Kings for parts of two seasons (2007-08) and went 44-62. He was fired after opening his second season with a 6-18 record.
Theus averaged 18.5 points and 6.3 assists in 1,026 games over 13 seasons as an NBA player from 1978-91. He was a two-time All-Star in six seasons for the Chicago Bulls and also played for four other franchises.
Prior to his NBA career, Theus starred at UNLV for three seasons under legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian and later had his No. 23 retired by the school.
Bethune-Cookman, a historical Black college, didn't participate in basketball during the 2020-21 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Theus will replace Ryan Ridder, who went 48-45 in three seasons at Bethune-Cookman before leaving to become coach at Tennessee-Martin.
