LUCKNOW: UP BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh lashed out at the opposition, essentially the Samajwadi Party, accusing it of insulting the democratic values by levelling false charges on the ruling BJP following its defeat in the Zila Panchayat chairman elections.
Singh’s counter-offensive came hours after SP chief Akhilesh Yadav slammed the BJP, accusing it of “making mockery of the free and fair elections”.
“The opposition was in the habit of abducting democracy. Be it in running the government or the party. It always had the culture of nepotism, corruption and crime,” the UP BJP president said. Singh said that the allegations made by the opposition leader show that they have lost their political grounds ahead of UP assembly elections due next year.
Singh said that the party was positioned to form the government once again after 2022 state polls. He claimed that the BJP would improve its tally from the one in 2017 state elections under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath.
Before that, he said, the party would consolidate its position further by performing incredibly well even in the Kshetra Panchayat elections. He said that instead of introspecting, the opposition was pointing fingers at the constitutional bodies (read the state election commission).
Crediting UP government and the party workers for its outreach to people in the time of need, Singh claimed that the BJP was getting more popular by each passing day. He said that even in the rural local bodies’ elections, people from all sections of life had supported the BJP. Singh said that the party juggernaut, which started in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, continued through various elections.
“The party has performed well from Parliament to Panchayat elections,” he said, adding that the win in the rural local bodies will help the party in reaching out to the people at the grass-roots.
