June recoveries surpassed new cases but deadliest for CCpur
Source: The Sangai Express

CCpur, July 02 2021: Number of patients recovering from COVID-19 in Churachandpur surpassed the number of new cases last month, but it still was the deadliest one and the highest among the hill districts.

As many as 2019 people recovered from the contagion in June, surpassing the 1990 new cases recorded by 39 .

However, it was also the deadliest month ever with an average death rate of 1.06 per day.

The mortality figure for the month went up to 32 .

This, taken together with 27 deaths recorded in May, makes up more than half of the 107 cumulative deaths (as of July 1) officially recorded in the district.

In March the saw just 2 deaths due to COVID-19 infection.

The big surge in fatality figures, seventh-fold from the month of May, is consistent with the upsurge in fresh cases as May saw 1526 fresh cases, a ten-fold increase from 159 reported in April.

As fresh cases and death counts continued to swell in June, it also saw a record shattering single day death of 6 people on June 27 .

The COVID-19 status report of IDSP CMO Churachandpur that day registered 4 deaths; one each from Kanan Veng, Vengnuam, Tuithapi and Thangkangphai.

On June 30, three days later, the IDSP report added two more females who expired on 27 June 2021 due to COVID- 19.One was from Taithu in Pherzawl district and the other was from Vengnuam South, New Lamka.

The CMO Churachandpur Dr VC Pau while revealing that the infection has reached many interior pockets nevertheless claimed that most of the localities where there are high positive cases are those where many people are still not inoculated with the Covid vaccine.

In a heartening sign, the CMO exuded confidence that new infections may well flatten or dip in July.

The progress made in vaccinating eligible citizens is the one factor that chiefly influences the assessment.

The locality of Rengkai where more than 800 received the Covid jab was a clear case of the vaccine working as those who got the infection ended up with mild cases.

There are no serious cases despite some of them contracting the virus, he said adding, the Covid jab, even a single dose of it.

is effective in fighting the virus.

Failure to wear masks at all times, even inside the house and the preference of home isolation over relocation at the Community Home Isolation Centre could be one key factor for the positive cases to climb, he said.

A highly placed source in the local administration however cited the density in population and the sub-urbanization of the district headquarters, which is next only to Imphal and unrivalled in other settlements in the hills could be the reason for the higher caseloads when compared with other hill districts.

Even then, the district still needs to be cautious, particularly of a possible third wave with the easing of slight activities as that could very well be a trigger for another wave.

SoP needs to be strictly maintained to avoid further worsening of the situation, maintained the source.

With more than 35 percent of the eligible population now vaccinated, and a substantial improvement in infrastructure be it in availability of oxygen, ambulances, isolation and ICU beds, the district is now much better prepared than it was a couple of months back, he said.

The oxygen plant with a capacity of 200 litres per minute, the functioning of 6 bedded ICU and the augmentation of isolation beds from 10 to 45/50 beds; the addition of three more ambulances, enhancement of oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrators.

The availability of 30-40 BiPAP machines and over 200 bedded CCC has now placed the district in a much more comfortable position.

However, the medical fraternity is of the opinion that reluctance to get tested in time due to certain falsified rumors could still be a stumbling block as early detection is the key in treating Covid infection.

According to Dr Paulunmang Vaiphei, the man in charge of inoculating the population, Churachandpur has so far inoculated about 36 percent of the 18+ population - the highest in the hill districts.

The district administration is planning to further enhance the inoculation exercise by instituting more mobile teams and advocacy groups.

With 83 new COVID-19 cases registered today, Churachandpur case tally has climbed to 5908.The current death toll as per the IDSP CMO Churachandpur data, stands at 107 with no new fatalities.

The district's active caseload has risen to 591, which is 10 per cent of the total cases at present.

As many as 5210 patients have recovered from the disease taking the recovery rate to 88 per cent.
