Mandleshwar (Khargone district, Madhya Pradesh): The effect of delay in monsoon is visible as the water level of Naramda river has receded to the extent that one can see pebbles at the surface here.
The river was overflowing till June 30. The lowest platform of Pedi Ghat that remained submerged throughout the summer season has now become visible due to decreasing water level.
According to local office of Central Water Commission, the water level of Narmada was 141 metres in last 15 days. It is approximately 139.500 metres now. According to Commission, a similar situation arose in 2009-10 when the water level of Narmada had decreased so much that one could walk in it from one bank to other bank.
Due to reduced water level, there is possibility that the drinking water system may break down from water treatment plant. On Thursday, municipal council made an announcement regarding non-supply of drinking water due to low water level.
According to Omkareshwar Hydroelectric Project, the power generation units are closed since July 1 due to which the inflow of water in lower basin of Narmada has reduced. Water is being stored in reservoir of Omkareshwar project.
Central Water Commission junior engineer Manish Sharma said daily information on river level is sent to Bhopal office. “The work of maintaining water level is related to Omkareshwar project,” he added.
