Wimbledon 2021: Roger Federer makes open era record as he beat Richard Gasquet

Roger Federer pursued his proffer for a record-extending ninth Wimbledon title with an exhaustive straight-sets victory over two-time semi-finalist Richard Gasquet 7-6(1), 6-1, 6-4 at the Centre Court. He will now face Britain’s Cam Norrie tomorrow as he advanced to the third round for a record 118th time, at the All England Club.

” I know Richard very well. We have played a lot of times facing each other. He has got such a wonderful backhand.

After he rioted that down the line, I thought maybe I can do something similar I’d be happy with and after that, I got on a roll so I am happy that he inspired me on the shot.

It was a sublime match for me. I was really happy with how I played today,” said Federer post-match.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion appeared in his tenth match in 19 months, got through a major scare in his first round where he faced Adrian Mannarino.

Eight-time champion Federer is chasing his 21st Grand Slam title that would put him above his rival Rafael Nadal. Both are currently tying with 20 Grand Slams.

Swiss star Federer had dominated over Gasquet for a decade winning his last 10 games and 22 sets vs the 35- year-old Frenchman.
