'We haven't conquered Everest yet': Gareth Southgate issues rallying cry to his England players ahead of Ukraine quarter-final as he prepares to hand Jadon Sancho a shock start due to Bukayo Saka injury doubt

Gareth Southgate has warned his England players ahead of Saturday night's crunch Euro 2020 quarter-final against Ukraine, saying: 'We haven't conquered Everest yet.'

England head into the clash in Rome on the crest of a wave after a euphoric victory over old foes Germany on Tuesday.

Southgate, who is set to revert to a four-man defence after using a back three against Germany, is likely to be without Bukayo Saka for Saturday's clash due to a knock in training.

It opens the door to Jadon Sancho to make his first start of the tournament, just two days after completing his move to Manchester United. Chelsea's Mason Mount is almost certain to start.

England are favourites to reach the semi-final but Southgate has warned his squad not to get ahead of themselves.

'We have achieved one challenge but that's not the Everest that we set ourselves — we want to push on,' said the England manager.
