The West Indies have bounced back to defeat the Proteas in the fourth T20 at the National Cricket Stadium in St George's on Thursday.

SCORECARD | West Indies v Proteas - 4th T20

The West Indies cruised to a 21-run victory to level the five-match T20 series 2-2, with the final T20 on Saturday.

Chasing 168 runs to clinch the series, the Proteas got off to a shaky start with Chris Gayle stumping Reeza Hendricks (2).

The Proteas top-order continued to disappoint with captain Temba Bavuma trapped by Obed McCoy for 7 and Aiden Markram swung and missed Andre Russell to be bowled for 20.

South Africa's batting hopes rested once again on in-form batsman Quinton de Kock, who is currently the leading run-scorer in this series.

The Proteas opener top-scored with 60 off 43 balls (6 fours and 2 sixes) before falling to all-rounder Dwayne Bravo in the 17th over with SA still requiring 43 to win.

Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals for the Proteas as Bravo delivered career-best T20I figures as he took four for 19 in his four overs.

All-rounder Andre Russell also contributed with the ball as he took two for 30 in his four overs.

The Proteas needed 30 runs off the final over with task too tall for bowlers Kagiso Rabada (16) and Anrich Nortje (4*) as they were restricted to 146/9.

After the Proteas sent the hosts to bat first, the Windies didn't get off to the best start as Nortje removed opener Evin Lewis (7) and Rabada removing the dangerous Gayle (5) in the third over.

A vital 31-run partnership between Lendl Simmons and Shimron Hetmyer before the Proteas spin attack kept the hosts at bay.

Spinners Shamsi (2/13) and Linde (2/16) starred with the ball as they not only slowed the run-rate down considerably but struck with the ball.

Hetmyer was the first to go as he edged Linde behind for 7. Two overs later, Linde struck again as he trapped Simmons for a well-played 47 off 34 balls (4 fours and 4 sixes).

Shamsi, who is the number-one ranked T20 bowler, continued his fine form and he struck twice to dismiss Nicholas Pooran (16) and Russell (9).

The West Indies were in trouble at 101-6 in 15.3 overs and the Proteas looked to restrict the hosts to 140, however, skipper Kieron Pollard had other plans in mind.

Pollard shared an unbeaten 66-run partnership with Fabian Allen (19*) as they scored 43 runs off the final two overs.

Player of the Match, Pollard top-scored with an unbeaten 51 off 25 balls (2 fours and 5 sixes) as West Indies posted 167/6 in their 20 overs, which was enough to send this T20 series to a thrilling finale.

The fifth and final T20 in St George's is scheduled to get underway at 20:00 SA time on Saturday.

Scores in brief:

West Indies - 167/6 in 20 overs (Pollard 51*, Simmons 47, Shamsi 2/14, Linde 2/16)

South Africa - 146/9 in 20 overs (De Kock 60, Markram 20, Bravo 4/19, Russell 2/30)

Result: West Indies win by 21 runs
