Six men charged with the unlawful possession of abalone worth R1.4 million have all been released on bail

Six men charged with the unlawful possession of abalone worth R1.4 million have all been released on R5 000 bail, by the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court.

Two of the suspects, Moses Gqola, 33, and Shaakir George, 21, were released on Friday while their co-accused, Athenkosi Bidla, 25, Eldrich Aylward, 45, Justin Killian, 25, and 30-year-old Justin Jantjies, were released last Tuesday, 22 June.

The suspects were arrested following a high-speed chase with the police on 8 June.

The chase ensued after police spotted a suspicious looking VW Caddy travelling in Central, Gqeberha.

The National Prosecuting Authority said police members gave chase and called for back-up in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

When the vehicle finally stopped, the six were apprehended.

The NPA said the police confiscated 1 689 units of abalone with a street value of just over R1.4 million. 

The vehicle and fishing gear were also confiscated.

The case has been postponed to 27 July 2021 for further investigation.
