Tokyo 2020 tourism legacy has a possibility to develop positive effect

Published on : Friday, July 2, 2021

To quote Ralph Hollister, travel and tourism analyst at GlobalData, “The positive aspects of Tokyo 2020’s tourism legacy will offer no quick fix for the amount of investment that will be lost due to no international visitation and restricted domestic visitation. However, it offers benefits for Japan in the long-term, and will assist the nation by creating a more robust and varied tourism product for future years.”

New infrastructure will add to the productivity, capacity, & attraction!
For the Olympics, enhanced transport links like Tokyo’s new Yamanote Line Station, will decrease overcrowding for Japanese residents and help to perking up domestic business efficiency, travel will go forward, and increase in the productive capacity of the Japanese economy.

In addition to the fact, the expansion of Terminal 2 at Haneda Airport was partially completed to build the capacity for the rise in international visitation that would have developed by the Olympics. Previously, Terminal 2 was domestic only. Though, a portion of this terminal has been converted and extended to create room for international gates. ANA in 2020 disclosed three brand-new lounges as it moved majority of its international operations to Terminal 2.

To quote Hollister, “This move from Japan’s largest airline shows how this expansion, which was done primarily for the Olympics, will benefit inbound tourism for years to come, adding greater capacity and brand-new lounges, which will increase tourism expenditure and improve touristic experiences.”

The pre-pandemic domestic visitation levels in Japan are predicted to be retained by 2022, as per GlobalData. Growth is expected to rise at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.3% from 2021 to 2024. By 2024, inbound visitation is hoped to reach pre-pandemic levels, which is significantly later than domestic tourism.
