NEW DELHI:
Google received 27,762
complaints from individuals in India between April1 and
April 30 and removed 59,350 pieces of content from its platform on the basis of these complaints. The data also includes court orders.
The information was part of the technology giants’ first India-specific transparency report released on Wednesday and in accordance with the country’s new IT rules. Most of the complaints received were related to issues of copyright (96%), followed by trademark (1.3%), defamation (1%),
legal (1%), counterfeit (0.4%) and circumvention (0.1%).
The report was published to comply with India’s IT Rules, 2021, which mandate significant social media platforms with more than 50 lakh users to publish compliance reports every month with details of complaints received and action taken.
“We have a long history of providing transparency into the different types of requests we receive from around the world, and how we respond. All of these requests are tracked and included in our existing Transparency Report since 2010. This is the first time we will publish a monthly transparency report in accordance with the new IT Rules, and will continue to publish more details as we refine our reporting processes for India,” a Google spokesperson said. The report also said there will be a two-month lag between reporting and publishing this data since processing of information takes time.
