Cotton Celebrates National Statistics Day

GUWAHATI: The statistics department of Cotton University celebrated National Statistics Day 2021 via Zoom platform here on Wednesday.
The meeting started with a welcome address by the head, department of statistics, Dr Sangeeta Barthakur who spoke about the life and works of late Prof. PC Mahalonobis, the father of modern Statistics of India, in whose honour this day is celebrated. The guest of honour of the programme, vice-chancellor Prof. Bhabesh Chandra Goswami, recalled with pride the many eminent alumni of the department and emphasized on the important role of statistics in diverse fields and encouraged the faculty to take up innovative steps in the field.
The chief guest, Dr Runjun Phookun, explained about the applications of statistical concepts in everyday life and on the hazards of the misuse of statistics and statistical packages. The invited speaker, Sushobhon Talukdar, from the ministry of finance, Government of India, while speaking on “Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index: the position of Assam vis’-a-vis’ India”, deliberated at length the first six SDGs and interacted with the participants.
The winners of the essay competition held on the occasion were then announced by its coordinator Dr Ruma Talukdar. Moderated by Dr Dulumoni Das, the meeting ended with the playing of the State Anthem after the vote of thanks by Inzamul Ahmed.
