History is witness to the many times a great onscreen chemistry between Bollywood celebrities has sparked a real-life connection. And in many cases, these duos have also continued to share screen space after cementing their status as a married couple. One of cinema's most enduring pairs, Hema Malini and Dharmendra, fell in love on the sets of their second film together in 1970; while Kajol and Ajay Devgn, who met during the filming of Hulchul in 1995, have given multiple hits together over the years. More recently, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh—who will now be appearing in the biographical sports drama, 83—collaborated on some stimulating cinematic projects this past decade. As cinema-goers wait for the much-loved duo to deliver their next feature together, we round up the film industry's seven most admired off-screen couples who have also played partners on screen.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan

From LOC Kargil (2003) to Agent Vinod (2012), the famed Bollywood couple has shared the screen in some thrilling narratives through the years. They were first cast opposite each other in Vijay Krishan Acharya's Tashan (2007), on the sets of which the duo are said to have fallen in love, and appeared in several sought-after films—including award-winning romance drama Omkara (2006) and edge-of-the-seat thriller Kurbaan (2009). However, Ali Khan once revealed in an interview, "When I am with Kareena on screen, I end up not performing. I become deferential and slightly boring in the frame. I don't compete and give enough energy. I kind of play myself, which is bad."

Apart from their successful films together, the power couple's journey in the industry has been defined by projects they took on individually. While the Pataudi prince has worked in over 60 Bollywood films, Kapoor Khan has been known for showcasing her versatile acting skills as a bubbly young girl in Jab We Met (2007), an earnest doctor and activist in Udta Punjab (2016), and more.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan

Having worked together in multiple Bollywood features, the duo have remained a top favourite among cinema-goers for nearly two decades now. The couple first appeared opposite each other in Dhai Akshar Prem Ke in 2000 and further went on to share screen space in films like Kuch Naa Kaho (2003), Umrao Jaan (2006), Dhoom 2 (2006), Guru (2007) and Sarkar Raj (2008). Their long-spanning career in acting has been marked by searing onscreen chemistry and varied challenging roles. The couple won hearts with their performances as Sujata Desai and Gurukant Desai in Guru. It was after the premiere of the same film in Toronto that Abhishek Bachchan proposed to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in a hotel balcony.

Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan

One of the most iconic couples of the film industry, Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan have given some major Bollywood hits together in their illustrious careers. From the romantic drama Guddi (1971)—on the sets of which they first met—to the action thriller Zanjeer (1973), comedy-drama Chupke Chupke (1975), and cult classics Sholay (1975), Silsila (1981) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), the duo have played intricate characters opposite each other, time and again. One of the most well-received onscreen couples they've played is in the latter, as Yashvardhan Raichand and Nandini Raichand in the Karan Johar directorial.

Kajol and Ajay Devgn

Now married for over two decades, Kajol and Ajay Devgn first met during the filming of Hulchul (1995). Since then, the couple has done multiple thrillers and romantic dramas together, including Ishq (1997), Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998), Raju Chacha (2000), U Me Aur Hum (2008) and, most recently, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020), in which they essayed the roles of Savitribai Malusare and Tanaji Malusare. The duo have come to be known as one of the most long-lasting and uncontroversial married couples in the film industry; and will hopefully be appearing opposite each other soon.

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh

Few onscreen pair-ups are as electrifying as Padukone and Singh, who have displayed their acting skills in films such as Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018), among others. The closely-followed actors are renowned for their dazzling performances as Ram and Leela in the larger-than-life romantic drama Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela; as well as their steamy chemistry in the songs 'Lahu Munh Lag Gaya' and 'Ishqyaun Dhishqyaun'. The celebrated couple will also be appearing in the much-awaited biographical sports film 83, in which they essay the roles of former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev and his wife Romi Bhatia.

Hema Malini and Dharmendra

Known as the 'Dream Girl' and 'He-Man' of Bollywood, Hema Malini and Dharmendra kicked off their onscreen journey together with Sharafat (1970)—and soon fell in love with each other while filming Tum Haseen Main Jawan during the same year. As the duo grew to be a much-loved cinematic pair in the subsequent years, they appeared in several successful films such as Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Sholay (1975), Dream Girl (1977), and more. To date, the couple's performance in the song 'Main Jat Yamla Pagla Deewana' from the movie Pratigya (1975) is admired by fans all over the world.

Genelia D'Souza and Riteish Deshmukh

D'Souza and Deshmukh began their acting careers in 2003, debuting together in romance drama Tujhe Meri Kasam. The duo's onscreen chemistry soon landed them the box office hit Masti (2004), in which they starred alongside Aftab Shivdasani, Vivek Oberoi, Tara Sharma, Amrita Rao and Lara Dutta. Apart from a few other Bollywood films, the pair has also appeared together in Lal Bhaari (2014)—a Marathi-language action drama directed by Nishikant Kamat.
