PUNE: Birthday celebrations of friends from Nigdi on Thursday evening turned tragic when a 25-year-old man and his friend drowned in a quarry filled with water at Kusgaon near Lonavla, about 50km from Pune. The Lonavla Rural police have identified the deceased as Akash Gurav and Virendra Triparhi (23) both from Rupinagar in Nigdi. The police said that it was Akash's birthday on Thursday. Along with his four friends, he had come to Lonavla to celebrate. "In the evening, they went to the quarry at Kusgaon and entered into the waters for swimming," said an officer from the Lonavla Rural police. The officer said that Akash and Virendra started drowning. Their friends tried to save them but failed. They raised an alarm and alerted the locals. By that time Akash and Virendra had drowned, the officer said.
