SC issues notice on plea of 13 Agra jail inmates for freedom

New Delhi, Jul 1 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice on a plea seeking the release of thirteen persons who started their 14 to 22 year stretches in the Agra jail as juveniles.

According to the plea, these prisoners have been denied release despite establishing that they were juveniles at the time of offence.

Apex court bench led by Justice Indira Banerjee also sought the response of the Uttar Pradesh government by July 8 on the petition filed through advocate Rishi Malhotra.

The Court posted the matter for further hearing on Jul 8, Thursday.

The writ petition contended the “very unfortunate and sorry state of affairs” in Uttar Pradesh, where many prisoners continue to languish in jail despite proving their claim of juvenility.

The plea also said that these persons had spent years in “hardcore jails” among “hardcore criminals” and this negates the purpose and objects of the Juvenile Justice Act.
