Scott Timmer is leaving the Fairfield assistant city manager job.

FAIRFIELD – After just five months as Fairfield’s assistant city manager, Scott Timmer is leaving to become Butler County’s second in command.

Timmer, 34, was hired this week as the county’s assistant administrator and begins work July 26. He will earn $135,000 annually.

Timmer’s hiring ends a nearly three-year search to find the right person for the job, said Commissioner Don Dixon.

“We’ve been looking for an assistant administrator for quite a while – two, three years – for the right person,” Dixon said.

“I knew we’d find somebody but I didn’t think it would take that long. I think he’ll be good – he’s a qualified, top-notch person.”

In his new role Timmer will assist county administrator Judi Boyko in developing long-range plans, policies and procedures; work on projects as assigned; develop a communication plan; oversee economic development efforts under Boyko’s direction; and serve as secretary to Butler County Port Authority board.

“(He will) assist me in projects, help keep priorities progressing and enhance some of the county’s delivery system of services,” Boyko said.

“It has been imperative to me to not only find the right skillset, but equally important to find the right personality to integrate into the team of directors. Scott appears to be the candidate that satisfies those needs.”

Timmer said he is looking forward to new challenges the county will provide.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with the county team. They’ve done a lot in the last few years,’’ Timmer said.

“I’ve gotten to do some fun and interesting projects in Fairfield."

Fairfield City Councilman Tim Abbott said Fairfield’s loss is the county’s gain.

“Scott Timmer was going to be the leading candidate to be our next city manager. His talents and skillsets were exactly what the city of Fairfield needed,’’ Abbott said.

“It’s a move Scott felt was in his best interest. Butler County has hit a grand slam in getting Scott Timmer into their organization.”

Timmer’s departure marks the second assistant city manager to leave the city since January. Dan Wendt resigned to become city manager of Vandalia. Timmer was promoted from finance director to replace Wendt a week later.

A Badin High School graduate, Timmer holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton and a master’s from Ohio Dominican University – both in business administration.

Before joining Fairfield in 2016, Timmer spent six years with the United States government as an accountant working for the departments of defense, veteran’s affairs and the environmental protection agency.

He is past president of the Greater Columbus Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants. He graduated from the Defense Civilian Emerging Leader program in 2012.

Timmer participated in the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program’s Class of 2018. A Fairfield resident, Timmer is a member of the Fairfield Rotary Club and serves on the board of trustees for the Greater Miami Valley YMCA and Badin High School.
